Some Precious metal terminology GF = Gold fill Gold fill is a base metal ; usually brass overlaid on all sides with gold and fused together 14/20 GF is 20% by weight 14 carat gold on a base metal fill ss = sterling silver An alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% some other metal ( usually Copper ) fs = fine silver 99.9% pure silver Gold is usually alloyed with some other metal or metals for color and hardness and other properties The number indicates the gold content in 24 parts: 24 Carat is pure Gold 14 Carat is 14 parts Gold (58.3% ) and 10 parts other metal 41.7% 10 Carat is 10 parts gold (41.7%) and 14 parts other metal (58.3%)
